Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Erectile dysfunction is a surprisingly common, if little talked about condition that affects up to half of all men occasionally, and can affect some men persistently.

The condition is characterised by the inability of a male to gain or maintain an erection sufficiently to perform sexual intercourse so it can have serious consequences for couples trying to conceive.

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by a number of factors ranging from the physical, to the psychological and to the drug induced. However, it is physical factors such as impairing of blood flow to the penis that typically cause erectile dysfunction. Known conditions that can impair blood flow to the penis are: atherosclerosis, diabetes, hypothyroidism, multiple sclerosis and chronic alcohol abuse.

So it should be no surprise that our first health tip to overcome this condition is to ditch the alcohol. You’ll also want to ditch the cigarettes too as research shows that men who smoke are at an increased risk of experiencing erectile dysfunction. You should also consider managing or maintaining a healthy weight as a study of obese men with erectile dysfunction, found that a low-calorie diet combined with regular exercise significantly improves erectile function.

Things you might like to add into your lifestyle are:

Ginkgo, this is a standardised herbal extract that appears to increase blood flow to the penis.

Arginine is another supplement which may help with erectile dysfunction because it is required by blood vessels to dilate and therefore form an erection and studies have shown that it has helped men with erectile dysfunction.

Propionyl L-Carnitine and Acetyl L-Carnitine have been demonstrated to improve erectile function particularly in elderly men, when taken in combination.

Finally you may like to add Pycnogenol to your diet as one study found it improved erectile function.

So if you are suffering or have suffered with erectile dysfunction, there are a number of things you can do to help overcome the problem!
