Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH)
- In Category Skin Care
DH is a rare, but serious food allergy that causes skin rashes that are characterised by intense itchiness and even hives or blister like patches of skin on places such as the elbows, knees and buttocks most commonly. With cases of sever DH the itching sensation mat be accompanied by a burning or stinging feeling.
As DH is caused by a food allergy, one of the best preventative measures you can take is to avoid Gluten and eat a diet free from Wheat, Rye and Barley. There are also a number of supplements you can introduce to your diet to help relieve the symptoms of DH, one of the most effective is a selenium supplement.
Selenium from Modern Herbals is a complex formula including: zinc, vitamin A, C and E and of course selenium. Selenium in combination with vitamin E has been shown in studies to correct the anti-oxidant deficiency that is common is suffers of DH. The zinc in the formula can also help tackle the nutrient deficiencies that arise from mal-absorption associated to DH too. Folic acid is another alternative to zinc to help tackle mal-absorption or you may like to try a multivitamin and iron supplement.
Another symptom often attributed to DH is low stomach acid, but you can supplement with Betaine Hydrochloride to help counteract this.
Finally, the supplement P.A.B.A. which is related to folic acid and comes in the form of vegetable capsules has been reported to actually reduce and in some cases eliminate the skin lesions of DH in one preliminary trial that was conducted.
